Rombout Firefighters Kept
Busy
Rombout Fire Department
responded to 43 calls in the month of November:
Seventeen motor vehicles
accidents, ten automatic alarms, three false alarms, four medical assist, two
calls for power lines down in the road, two structure fires, one pump out and
one vehicle fire. Rombout also provided mutual aid stand-by coverage for
Glenham and Castle Point Fire Departments. The
Village
of Fishkill responded and assisted Rombout at a serious auto accident and a
structure fire. This makes 432 total calls for the year.
Firefighter Walter Brozman and Assistant Chief John Cerrato have been credited
with saving the life of an accident victim who was unconscious and not
breathing. Their quick action in removing the
victim from the automobile and resuscitating him saved his life.
Training highlights:
November 10- A refresher course on AED/CPR was given by Ron Piga. The Jaws of
Life drill was held so the members could refresh their skills and techniques of
extricating victims from vehicles. This is where skill, speed and safety play a
key role in rescuing the victim. Members were
able to successfully use the high-pressure hydraulic tools to cut, pry and lift
several wrecked cars. These skills were recently put to use in saving a victim
in an auto accident in November.
A hazardous materials operations level refresher course was given by Steve
VanBuren, Chief of the Dutchess County Haz-Mat Team, refreshing firefighters on
proper procedures for dealing with chemical incidents.
Congratulations to Chris Mazzuca and Kevin Barry for completion of the NYS
Intermediate Firefighter Course, qualifying them as interior firefighters. This
36 hour New York State certified course was held at Putnam County Fire Training
Center at Lake Carmel, instructed by Charles Liggio of the New York State
Office of Fire Prevention and Control. Chris and Kevin trained with personal
from North Highlands, Cold Spring, Carmel, Brewster, Putnam Lake, Mohegan and
Mahopac Falls Fire Departments with their final evaluation at a "live" burn
session at the Dutchess County Fire Training Center on Creek Road in
Poughkeepsie.

Have a safe
Holiday season by checking your holiday lights for frayed or worn
wires and cracked sockets and plugs. Keep candles away from napkins, drapes,
greenery, or other flammable materials and never decorate a tree with candles.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM YOUR FRIENDS AND
NEIGHBORS AT THE ROMBOUT FIRE DEPARTMENT.
